An update: with the help of an Air Force historian, I’ve completed a manuscript (50+ pages including endnotes and exhibits) and submitted it to a history journal for publication. I’ll keep you posted.

Clifford Heflin, first commander of the Carpetbaggers and later commander of Wendover, the base where the crews trained for dropping the atomic bombs on Japan; along with Tibbets, he ferried the bombs to the Pacific and was Tibbet’s back-up pilot. I’m writing a profile of Col Heflin’s service and thanks much for your blog.
